How to Prepare for BECE in Sierra Leone: A Complete 2026 Study Guide

A practical, week-by-week BECE preparation plan for Sierra Leone JSS3 pupils — subjects, past papers, WAEC marking style and revision tips.

What is the BECE and why it matters

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is the end-of-JSS3 exam run by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE). For pupils in Freetown, Bo, Kenema, Makeni and every district in Sierra Leone, BECE results decide senior secondary school placement and open the door to WASSCE.

Strong BECE grades signal to senior secondary schools that a pupil is ready for the WASSCE syllabus — so the earlier a JSS3 pupil starts practising past questions, the better.

Core BECE subjects to focus on

The BECE covers the core JSS curriculum. On ExamBridge Africa you can practise every subject below with real past-paper questions and instant feedback:

  • English Language — comprehension, essay and grammar
  • Mathematics — number, algebra, geometry, statistics
  • Integrated Science — biology, chemistry, physics fundamentals
  • Social Studies — Sierra Leone civics, geography, history
  • Religious and Moral Education (RME)
  • Business Studies, Home Economics, Agriculture (electives)

A 12-week BECE revision plan

Twelve weeks before the exam, split each week into 4 subject blocks of 45 minutes. Rotate through the six subjects so nothing is left cold in the last month.

Weeks 1–4: work through past papers from the earliest year you can find. Focus on understanding the marking style, not on your score. Weeks 5–8: timed MCQ practice, subject by subject. Weeks 9–12: full mock papers under exam conditions, then review every wrong answer.

How to use past papers the WAEC way

WAEC recycles question patterns. If you have practised the last 10 years of BECE English past papers, you have already seen almost every essay type that can be asked. Use ExamBridge Africa's BECE English past papers section to work backwards year by year, and read the model answers so you learn how the marker scores each point.

Common BECE mistakes to avoid

Pupils lose marks by rushing through instructions, skipping compulsory sections, and running out of time on essays. Practise with a timer, and always leave five minutes to check answers.
